What is The Canopy at Brenton Skating Plaza?
The Canopy at Brenton Skating Plaza is installed every May through mid-October. The Canopy is 160 feet tall and is available for outdoor event rental, including reunions, business events, concerts and weddings.
Why should I rent out The Canopy?
The Canopy provides a beautiful view of Downtown Des Moines and protection from the weather. It is a great venue for outdoor events during the spring, summer and fall.
How can I rent The Canopy?
Brenton is available for rent daily subject to weather and other scheduled events. Reservations for Brenton are on a first come, first seved basis. Book your event for this season or the 2017 spring/summer/fall season today!
Is a contract or deposit required?
Yes, you must fill out our agreement accompanied by the full rental rate to secure your date.
Do you provide tables or chairs?
No, we do not have any rental items except fencing. The rental fee for fencing is $150.00; This fee includes set up and take down.
Do I need to rent Lighting?
We have minimal lighting, but for evening rentals you will need to supply lighting. Lighting is beautiful on the canvas of the canopy! No open flames are allowed under the canopy.
Can we decorate?
Absolutely, but no decorations or signage can be attached to the canopy. You can decorate the railing going around the Plaza, but no candles with flame, bird seed, glitter, rice or confetti are allowed.
Do we have to use a specific caterer?
Yes, for all private events (any event not open to the public, like weddings, corporate receptions, etc.) contact Christiani’s Catering at 515-287-3169.
For a $100 fee, other licensed caterers may provide services to Brenton Skating Plaza on Sunday’s through Thursdays. Caterers will be assessed a 15 percent vender fee.
Do we need a sound permit?
Any amplified sound (DJ, live band) requires a sound permit. The cost is $40.00. Applicant must purchase the sound permit from the City as soon as the application is approved. The permit can be purchased from the City of Des Moines Permit & Development Dept at 602 Robert D Ray Drive (just north of the Brenton Skating Plaza). They are open Monday through Friday 8 am to 4:30 pm. Once obtained, a copy must be sent to the Brenton Plaza Manager.
Please note: With Brenton Plaza being an outdoor venue, there is a chance that other outdoor venues (like Simon Estes) could have events at the same time.
What hours can we rent?
Friday and Saturday: 9 a.m. – Midnight.
Sunday through Thursday: 9 a.m. – 11 p.m.
Events need to end at midnight or 11 p.m. due to the sound permit. For your rental hours you must plan for set up and clean-up. Please plan on clean up no later than 1 a.m. unless arrangements have been made.
